Itchenor Taster Days
Itchenor Sailing Club staged a series of 5 taster sailing days over June and July aimed at existing members and non – members offering the opportunity to try dinghy sailing with RYA Instructor Melvyn Cooper. Sailing in the club’s RS Vision ‘Wind Conquer’ for the first time Neal Scambler said; “I really enjoyed the taster day and it has done just what I set out to achieve – to give me a push to continue along the path of becoming a competent sailor”. More sailing day sessions are planned in September and October this year. Club Race Coaching
Hayling Island Sailing Club Club race coaching sessions have run once a month throughout the summer. A variety of boats including RS 200, RS 400, RS Vareo, RS Feva and Mirror classes have taken part. Subjects have included how and where to start a race; flags and hooters; wind and tide times; where is the course and the racing marks; the first beat to the windward mark and downwind course; and boat handling skills including teamwork and communication. It’s open to anyone wishing to try their hand in a race or anyone who has started racing and needs confidence to improve starting on the line, sailing to the windward mark, identifying the racing marks or perhaps the tide is still a mystery. RYA Regional Club coach Melvyn Cooper said the remaining two coaching dates are Saturday 1st September and Saturday 6th October 2012. HISC members only.

Jan Garety second
Bosham Sailing Club Regatta was held on 21st July 2012 in perfect conditions and with keen competition. Jan Garety sailing her single-handed Streaker ‘Scamp’ focused time on improving her racing skills by planning a series of coaching sessions with Melvyn Cooper Sailing this summer. Jan was delighted with her regatta result and sent this message “Thanks to your coaching I came 2nd in the Bosham Sailing Club medium handicap today!”

Women on Water
Hayling Island Sailing Club hosted its annual Women on Water course 27th – 29th June 2012. Lessons for complete beginners to improvers in the RS Vision, RS Feva and Topper provided the perfect opportunity to learn technical skills and build confidence on the water. Rogers 2nd and 3rd
Mengham Rythe Sailing Club staged its annual race Junior Week over 5 days from 30th July – 3rd August 2012 in almost perfect sailing conditions. In the RS Tera Red Fleet Marcus Rogers sailed a consistent series of races to finish an outstanding 2nd place overall and only 1 point behind the leader. Anna Rogers racing her RS Tera in the Blue Fleet for the first time came home with a superb 3rd overall from a fleet of 25 boats. Both Marcus and Anna were coached for a few days leading up to the event by Melvyn Cooper Sailing. Parent Alison Rogers said “Its the first time Anna had really understood the racing package and she knew exactly how to achieve a good result.” Melvyn added “It’s so rewarding to see these results from Marcus and Anna, a real boost of confidence to their racing.”
